ABSTRACT

Fertilization with dehydrated sewage sludge can speed up the recovery process of degraded areas due to nutrients concentration, favoring the development of pioneer plants such as Acacia auriculiformis A. Cunn. ex Beth (Fabales: Fabaceae) and the emergence of insects. This study aimed the evaluation of chewing, pollinating insects, predators, their ecological indices and relationships on A. auriculiformis plants fertilized with dehydrated sewage sludge. The experimental design was completely randomized with two treatments (with and without dehydrated sewage sludge) and 24 repetitions. The prevalence of chewing insects Parasyphraea sp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Nasutitermes sp. (Blattodea: Termitidae), and Tropidacris collaris (Stoll, 1813) (Orthoptera: Romaleidae), defoliation, and ecological indices of abundance of Coleoptera and Orthoptera were observed on fertilized A. auriculiformis. Acacia auriculiformis plants, with a superior number of branches/tree, revealed greater abundance of Coleoptera and Orthoptera, species richness of pollinating insects, defoliation, numbers of Parasyphraea sp. and T. collaris. The ones with larger leaves/branches displayed greater abundance of species richness of Coleoptera and Diabrotica speciosa (Germar, 1824) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Therefore, the use of A. auriculiformis plants, fertilized with dehydrated sewage sludge, is promising in the recovery of degraded areas due to the ecological indices increase of chewing and pollinators insects and spiders in the analyzed area.

ABSTRACT

Roadblocks of wild animals are frequent and often cause bone fractures that if not properly treated lead to the death of the animal due to complications or inability to survive in its natural habitat. The objective of the present study was to report the use of plate rod and bioglass 60S (BG60S) for the treatment of femoral fracture in anteater. The animal was rescued by environmental police on suspicion of being hit. It was sedated for clinical and radiographic evaluation, which revealed a fracture in the right femur. Dexmedetomidine was used as preanesthetic medication, midazolam and ketamine for induction, and isoflurane for maintenance. Epidural blockade with bupivacaine and morphine was also performed. Osteosynthesis was done with a locking plate 2.7 and 2.5 intramedullary pin. 4G of BG60S was placed in the focus of fracture to favor osteogenesis. The patient had immediate functional recovery of the affected limb. The bone repair occurred by second intention, with complete ossification of the callus with clinical consolidation at 30 days, and near complete remodeling at 180 days. It is concluded that the use of plate rod to the BG60S is efficient in the treatment of femur fracture in anteater, allowing the rapid recovery and reintroduction of the animal in the wild.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a GnRH synthetic analog, as an estrous inducer in female dogs when administered during the anestrous phase, and to evaluate the pregnancy rate achieved through natural copulation. For this purpose, ten female dogs of different breeds were used. The subjects received buserelin by intramuscular injections at a dose of 2,1mcg when female dogs weighed up to 10kg (Group 1) and of 4,2mcg when the dogs weighed above 10kg (Group 2). Of the ten subjects, only three presented estrus after a single injection of buserelin: two dogs from Group 1 and one dog from Group 2 on average 7±1.29 days. The remaining seven dogs were given a second dose of buserelin, equal to the first administration. Of these, three belonged to Group 1 and four to Group 2. Four of these dogs exhibited clinical signs of estrus within, on average 9±7.3 days from the second injection. The seven female dogs that did enter estrus were fertilized successfully through natural copulation. The administration of buserelin was effective in inducing estrus in female dogs during the anestrous phase, with a maximum of two administrations.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to estimate components of genetic variance, phenotypic and residual and heritability for traits related to the production of honey and the nest structure of bee Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides. Sixty colonies from different regions of Bahia were transferred to standard INPA model boxes and divided, creating the parental generations G1 and G2. The following characteristics were measured: estimated production of honey, number, width, height and volume of the honey pots, number, height and diameter of pollen storage pots, weight, number, length and diameter of the brood combs and estimate the population of the colony. The measurements were corrected for the fixed effects of month of measurement. The variance components and heritability were estimated by the method of similarity between relatives using the Bayesian approach. The mean and standard deviations ranged from 2.01±0.70cm diameter pots for pollen to 2333.0±384.1kg to the weight of the boxes. There was indication of convergence for all the chains obtained. Estimates of the additive genetic variance ranged from 0.02cm to the width characteristics of honey pots to 38587.72kg for weight. For the estimates of phenotypic variance the values ranged from 0.05 for the height of the pollen pots to 95136.43kg for weight; and the residual variance the values varied from 0.02 for the variable width of the honey pots to 56548.71kg for weight. The results showed that the characteristics assessed have additive genetic variation that ensures good response to selection.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of apoptosis in the ovaries of cattle and buffalo fetuses between 4 and 8 months old by the terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase - mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay . Histological analysis of the ovarian t issue showed that apoptosis occurred at all ages evaluated , presenting a similar pattern among different fetal stages in both species . Within species, secondary follicles displayed a higher (P 0.05) of apoptotic follicular cells among the three follicular classes compared . C omparing resul ts between species, secondary follicles had a higher (P < 0.05) mean number of TUN EL positive cells in bovine fetuses; however , this difference was proportional to the larger number of follicular cells present in secondary follicles in this species . In summary, the TUNEL method was effective for the detection of apoptosis in the support ing cells of ovarian follicles from bovine and buffalo fetuses with apoptosis occurring at similar rates in both species between 4 and 8 months of gestational age. Further studies are needed to better understand the dynamics of apoptosis as a regulator of follicular atresia in fetal ovaries from these species, as well as the potential involvement of the oocyte in this process.

ABSTRACT

The first autochthonous case of American cutaneous leishmaniasis was reported in the Federal District in 1980, and the species involved in this type of leishmaniasis was unknown. This study aimed to identify the species that causes the disease in the Federal District and to investigate its clinical and epidemiological aspects. Between 2000 and 2007, 71 autochthonous cases of leishmaniasis were reported in the Federal District. Leishmania species were identified by means of direct immunofluorescence reactions using monoclonal antibodies and restriction fragment length polymorphism. The species of 40 (56.33%) out of 71 samples were identified. Thirty-six (90%) were identified as Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis and four (10%) were identified as Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis. In this area, the disease had clinical and epidemiological characteristics similar to those found in other Brazilian regions.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to report the amplification of the DNA of Leishmania (V.) braziliensis, using polymerase chain reaction, obtained from the saliva of a patient with American cutaneous leishmaniasis who did not present any lesion in the oral mucosa. Amplification produced fragments of 103 bp, an estimated size employing Leishmania (V.) braziliensis primers (b1 e b2). The present results revealed, for the first time, that the in vitro amplification of Leishmania DNA using samples from the salivary fluid of a patient with American cutaneous leishmaniasis is possible. However, more studies are required with a larger number of participants to evaluate the usefulness of saliva as a non-invasive sample for PCR. The development of such non-invasive technique is necessary for the diagnosis of many diseases in the future, especially infectious and parasitic ones.

ABSTRACT

The present work aimed to evaluate the effect of liming and bovine fertilization on Lippia citriodora Kunth phytomass and essential oil production. The experimental design was completely randomized with seven treatments (control; Ca and Mg sulfate; limestone; Ca and Mg silicate; Ca and Mg sulfate + manure; limestone + manure; Ca and Mg silicate + manure) and two harvest seasons, with four replicates. Soil adjustment showed to be a necessary procedure for Lippia citriodora development. Independently of the harvest season, fresh and dry matter yields were higher under treatments with bovine manure (32 t ha-1); however, no effect of treatments was observed on essential oil concentration.

ABSTRACT

The hematological parameters and total protein concentration in healthy donkeys during pregnancy, under grass handling conditions in tropical weather, were evaluated. Fifth-two Marchador Brasileiro breed healthy donkeys, ranging from 8 to 16 years old, were evaluated, 36 of which were pregnant. The animals were separated in four groups: non pregnant (control), pregnancy from 25 to 110 days (first phase), from 111 to 210 days (second phase), and from 211 to 340 days (third phase). Total protein, erythrocyte, and leukocytes counts; packed cell volume; hemoglobin concentration; hematimetric absolute rates of mean corpuscular volume (MCV); mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH); and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were evaluated. Total protein and eosinophils count decreased in the first phase. Red blood cells, hemoglobin concentration, and MCHC increased in the third phase of pregnancy. However, MCV and MCH decreased in the same phase.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide and the third among the female population in Brazil. HPV plays an important role in the development of cervical cancer, being present in 95% of cases of cancer of the cervix. Glassy cells carcinoma is a poorly differentiated mixed adenosquamous carcinoma, rare, aggressive and highly resistant to radiotherapy. It typically affects young women, with peak incidence between the third and fourth decades of life. It is associated with types 16 and 18 of HPV and its evolution is acelerated during pregnancy. The average survival time after diagnosis is 10 months.Case Report: woman, 26 years old, multiparous, with a history of condyloma acuminata, genital lesions that had increased in their last pregnancy, having evolved with exophytic masses diagnosed as glassy cell carcinoma, and aggressive course with early metastases not responsive to radiation therapy and progression to death in 16 months. Conclusion: glassy cells carcinoma is distinguished by aggressiveness and speed of its development, leading child-bearing age and productive young women to death. In view of its low response to anticancer therapies, we highlight the importance of its prevention, early diagnosis and treatment, possible through the use of condoms, the vaccine against HPV and cervical cytology at regular collection of endocervical material and effective monitoring.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin A (BTA) is commonly used to treat children with cerebral palsy (CP). However, the variables measured before BTA application and associated with motor function and independent mobility, known as predictors of functional outcomes, have not been well defined. OBJECTIVE: To identify clinical predictors of gains in functional motor skills and independence of mobility among children with CP, three and six months after BTA application. METHODS: This was a convenience sample of children with spastic CP (n=35). Measurements of quantitative gains in motor skills and independence of mobility were taken three and six months after BTA application. These outcomes were observed through repeated applications of two functional tests: GMFM (Gross Motor Function Measure) and PEDI (Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory). These tests evaluated gross motor function while sitting or standing and during transitions between these postures, and also during dynamic activities such as walking, running and jumping, along with the children's independence in mobility tasks. The independent variables included the children's characteristics such as age, severity, topographic diagnosis, neuromuscular-skeletal parameters (range of motion and spasticity), gait quality and performance in the functional tests before BTA. RESULTS: Four predictive models were developed (R² between 0.58 and 0.83; p<0.05) through the use of CART analysis: two at three months and two at six months after BTA application. The results indicated that children with better gait quality, smaller repertoire of functional motor skills, less independence of locomotion and age below four years and six months before BTA presented greater gains in motor skills and independence in mobility. CONCLUSION: The results identified significant clinical parameters that can predict functional outcomes of BTA applications among children with CP.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The efficacy of intravenous heparin administration (100UI/kg/8h, from 24 to 48h after carbohydrate administration) in the control of carbohydrate overload-induced equine laminitis (17.6g of corn starch/kg live weight) was evaluated. Fifteen horses were allocated into three experimental groups: GI (control group), GII (laminitis group), and GIII (laminitis+heparin group). These animals were submitted to physical and laboratorial examination during 48h. After that time, they were euthanized with intravenous administration of 5ml of acepromazine followed by 1g of thiopental sodium and 1 liter of saturated solution of KCl to obtain hoof tissues samples for histological examination. GII and GIII horses developed laminitis, showing lameness 12 and 24h after carbohydrate administration, respectively, as well increased heart rate and capillary refill time. The histological alterations, similar in GII and GIII, were degenerative lesions, as thinness of epidermal lamina, retraction, flattening and dislocation of the dermal lamina, epidermal vacuolization, and disruption of the epidermal tissues. The occurrence of laminar degeneration was not prevented or attenuated with intravenous heparin administration.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To understand physical therapists' representations regarding Repetitive Strain Injury/Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (RSI/WRMSD) and to analyze how these representations interfere with the clinical practice of these professionals. METHODS: The study took a qualitative approach, and the methodological tools were semi-structured interviews and non-participatory observation. The theory of social representations and comparative epistemology served as the theoretical foundations for the study. Fourteen physical therapists from the city of Divinópolis, Minas Gerais, took part in this study. RESULTS: The physical therapists' representations about RSI/WRMSD and patients were collectively elaborated on the basis of the therapists daily practice. A reductionistic thinking style with a mechanistic conceptualization of the human organism was perceived among the interviewees. CONCLUSIONS: It is insufficient to direct efforts towards restoring the normal functioning of the body if the patient's needs are ignored. Physical therapists' scientific and technical knowledge should be reconciled with patients' subjective expression, in order to seek more effective intervention strategies.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the present study was to evaluate breathing pattern, thoracoabdominal motion and muscular activity during three breathing exercises: diaphragmatic breathing (DB), flow-oriented (Triflo II) incentive spirometry and volume-oriented (Voldyne) incentive spirometry. Seventeen healthy subjects (12 females, 5 males) aged 23 ± 5 years (mean ± SD) were studied. Calibrated respiratory inductive plethysmography was used to measure the following variables during rest (baseline) and breathing exercises: tidal volume (Vt), respiratory frequency (f), rib cage contribution to Vt (RC/Vt), inspiratory duty cycle (Ti/Ttot), and phase angle (PhAng). Sternocleidomastoid muscle activity was assessed by surface electromyography. Statistical analysis was performed by ANOVA and Tukey or Friedman and Wilcoxon tests, with the level of significance set at P < 0.05. Comparisons between baseline and breathing exercise periods showed a significant increase of Vt and PhAng during all exercises, a significant decrease of f during DB and Voldyne, a significant increase of Ti/Ttot during Voldyne, and no significant difference in RC/Vt. Comparisons among exercises revealed higher f and sternocleidomastoid activity during Triflo II (P < 0.05) with respect to DB and Voldyne, without a significant difference in Vt, Ti/Ttot, PhAng, or RC/Vt. Exercises changed the breathing pattern and increased PhAng, a variable of thoracoabdominal asynchrony, compared to baseline. The only difference between DB and Voldyne was a significant increase of Ti/Ttot compared to baseline. Triflo II was associated with higher f values and electromyographic activity of the sternocleidomastoid. In conclusion, DB and Voldyne showed similar results while Triflo II showed disadvantages compared to the other breathing exercises.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Aggregation of research evidence to guide clinical practice is one of the main reasons for conducting studies that provide a synthesis of the literature, but it is not the only reason. Systematic reviews are designed to be methodical, explicit and replicable. Such studies may help to guide project development, by indicating new directions for further investigations and identifying which research methods have been used within a given area. METHODS: Systematic reviews require straightforward questions, search strategy definition, establishment of study inclusion and exclusion criteria and careful analysis of the selected literature. The development process for reviews of this type includes characterization of each selected study, evaluation of their quality, identification of important concepts, comparison of statistical analyses used and conclusions regarding what the literature tells us about a specific intervention. Such reviews also suggest problems/questions that need further investigation. Systematic review studies follow the structure of original articles. CONCLUSION: Good systematic reviews are important resources, in the light of the accelerated growth of scientific information. These studies help in producing syntheses of the evidence available in the literature on specific interventions, and may help clinicians and researchers in their work process.

ABSTRACT

Fibrin glue has been researched as an alternative method for tissue synthesis and is known for its capability to promote hemostasis at the application site, good approximation of wound edges and fast healing. The current study consisted in the application of fibrin glue derived from snake venom as treatment for experimental corneal ulcers. Twenty-one dogs had their corneas experimentally prepared through lamellar keratectomy (of standardized diameter and depth). Animals were divided into seven groups of three animals each. Six experimental groups were periodically evaluated and collection was carried out on the 1st, 3rd, 7th, 15th, 30th and 60th post-operative days, whereas one control group was evaluated throughout the experiment. Analyses consisted in the clinical evolution and in the histopathological study of all operated on eyes. Results indicated that fibrin glue was efficient in repairing keratectomy wounds in dogs and contributed to an earlier healing phenomenon, avoiding edema formation and keeping corneal clearness. The use of fibrin glue derived from snake venom showed to be easy to apply, feasible with animal models and of low cost, avoiding the lesion progress and allowing fast and appropriate corneal healing.

ABSTRACT

Pentavalent antimonial (SbV) is the first treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Other drugs present similar side effects and higher cost. Oral miltefosine is effective to treat kala-azar. The aim of the present study was to compare the efficacy of glucamine (SbV) plus topical miltefosine with glucamine in the treatment of CL. Eighty isogenic C57BL/6 mice were inoculated with Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis and divided into two groups: one group was treated with SbV associated with miltefosine, and the other group received SbV plus saline solution. Groups were evaluated according to the diameter of the inoculated foot pad, the culture, and the parasite count using the limiting dilution assay. There was not statistical difference. The efficacy of glucamine in CL treatment did not increase when associated with topical miltefosine.(AU)
